Welcome to the Iowa Hummingbird Project!

The purpose of this site is to gather information on the occurrence of rare or unseasonal hummingbirds in Iowa.  The vast majority of hummingbirds migrating through Iowa, and the only ones breeding in the state, are Ruby-throated Hummingbirds.  However, four other species have been recorded to date:  Rufous Hummingbird, Anna’s Hummingbird, Broad-billed Hummingbird, and Green Violet-ear.

With only five species officially recorded in Iowa, our state hummingbird list is lower than most Midwestern states.  Species recorded in nearby states include Black-chinned, Calliope, Costa’s, Broad-tailed, Allen’s, White-eared, Magnificent, and Blue-throated hummingbirds, and Green-breasted Mango.  Some of these species are very distinctive and could hardly be missed if they showed up at a feeder.  However most, especially female and immature birds, are similar enough to the abundant Ruby-throated that they can easily go unnoticed.

We are looking to raise awareness of the potential occurrence of these rarer species and generate reports from anyone fortunate to have one visit their feeder.  If you think you may have an unusual hummingbird at your feeder or are interested in learning what to look for, check out our Reporting page.
